The Trouble With Time

What did I want?

Shoot, to write full-time and that be the end of it.

The “His and Hers” series released in the Fall of 2019 and that was my hype for the season. Didn’t make me no never mind whether it made me a pocketbook of money, or super known in the indie author industry. I was ready to keep writing, publishing and for my work to ultimately yield to my own community of authentic supporters. I had done a thing and I was proud of that. And for those who read it, liked it and asked for more? Maaaan, that only amplified my eagerness to hit the gas on everything.

I was just getting started. My ability to switch from contemporary women’s fiction driven by characters to a plot driven, topsy turvy, tangled web of moving parts drama fiction was my revelation. I had to believe it first. And I did.

The new year came and like most folks, my goals were in place and mentally…I was ready.

I mean, the formula was simple enough: consistency and good stories.

Fast forward to February 3rd, 2020. I posted a cover reveal for my upcoming Novella, “Only Forever.” 💕 Loved it. Still do. Couldn’t wait to print a paperback because it was so darn pretty! Mercy B. Carruthers did her thing with designing the ‘feel’ for my covers, my brand and my stories. I felt, “Oh, it’s on now! I can’t WAIT to drop this, release that and freely do, create and write what I love.

and then…

Nothing.

No release.

No update.

NOTHING!

I hit a wall so hard that I questioned if this was really something I wanted to do.

”Is this a passion, a hobby, career goal, what?”

Cause how?

How could I go from ready and doing to…nothing?

Three months into the new year and what I’ve learned about myself is that when I’m on…I’m on and there’s no in between.

I looked around me and thought “Well, she’s doing it.” Or “That person has kids and responsibilities, too.”

What was wrong with me? Why couldn’t I find the energy, the drive and the hustle to do this thing I swore to wanting so bad?

Listen, there’s a crime in comparison and I knew better than to do that. I was burnt OUT. Between our family’s transitioning, working a 9-5 in production with a baby at home, a 7th grader who not only practiced and played basketball, but also trained several times a week, remembering to drink water, workout…maaaan. 😩
I needed to create a new email list, post consistency, master canva, write more, cook in between and don’t forget to drink the damn water!

I was ashamed to admit that I didn’t have a handle on everything. Anything, really. Days turned into weeks that I did absolutely nothing. The thought of EVERYTHING on my to-do list frustrated me and the nights of getting nothing done stressed me. It was a complicated battle between do or not do.

I couldn’t catch a break. My health issues worried me into sleepless nights and doctor google sent me to urgent care twice. Two medical bills just for them to tell me “You’re okay.”

…but stressed nonetheless.

The trouble with time is that even when there’s enough of it, prioritizing and not over exhausting myself with unrealistic deadlines is important not only for work-life balance, but for my health and well-being. Otherwise, I’ll probably psyche myself into believing I’m having a stroke. 🥴😄 (Another story for another day).

Sigh

I’d already declared the up and up with my writing career. What I look like backing out all because I’m tired by 10pm?

So what now? After getting to the root of the problem and slowing down, what was I supposed to do from there?

Idle time wasn’t easy, but it was most certainly necessary.

My husband introduced me to a book he was listening to on audible…I’m blessed to have a life partner who’s always striving for a better version of himself. I trust his opinion, and well…I listened for myself.

I was headed to Target on this particular day. The day was already eh😒 and I was tired of the radio. Brandon was always listening to podcasts and self-help books, so I’m like let me do it differently today.
Turned on the recommended audible…and😳. In the first few chapters, Atomic Habits began to shape and change my thinking. Now I don’t mean to sound like one of those super cheesy, salesy, this worked for me, kind of person, but ya’ll…it’s safe to say it’s been LIFE changing. I remember thinking, sure I’m busy with mommying, but part of the problem is, I have a horrible system and a list of bad habits.”

I did away with all book and writing stuff. I mean everything. I didn’t think about it. I didn’t focus on it. I needed to build this thing from the inside out. I needed to take control of my life, my health and my thinking. I started implementing the 1% logic (read the book) and whew! Implementing 1% into a task gave me control of my day and made me feel that though they were small, everyday I was building and moving forward.

Anyway, I said all of that to ease into the fact that if writing and creating is in you, it’ll never leave. Ever. A lil’ breaky-break hasn’t stopped me.

I found an accountability partner through Writer’s Rowe and it’s been golden! ✨ That 1% everyday has found its way into my writing and with the encouragement from my partner and my new habits, I’ve been able to do more in two weeks than I was able to in two months.

The difference this time though? This is not me trying to wow you with a story about a breakthrough. I’m still tired by 10pm. I’m ok with breaks and missing deadlines🙄.

In this interesting season of change, if you’re anyone who’s felt or feeling the frustrations of doing and keeping up, I hope some of this helps and encourages you that you’re alright, you’ll be alright and your time is yours.

Who knows. Maybe I was put on this earth to be an archeologist.

But today…

What do I want?

Shit, to write full-time and that not be the end of it.

…to be continued.

4 Ways I'm Mentally Preparing for the new year

…because this can be an episode of keeping up and stressing out, OR I can choose to readjust, focus and prepare.

I choose the latter.

In no particular order, these are 4 ways I plan to mentally prepare for the new year.

  1. Having Several Seats

And I prefer the window. This year has been BUSY. The highlight? Bailey Nicole. My beautiful daughter has blessed our lives and I’m so full and complete in this moment of time. It has been fun and it has been b u s y. I turned 30 a week after her birth and I honestly can’t remember what that was like for me…celebrating a new year of my own life. I accomplished a major goal by releasing new work into the literary world and while I have a number of projects I would like to complete in the year 2020, it’s time to rest. Work, yes, but rest, for sure.

  2. Decluttering

As a creative, you can usually argue that there’s a method to your madness, but a cluttered brain for me is heading nowhere fast. I have so many ideas and so many plans that it’s literally impossible to do it all within the mental deadline that I’ve set for myself. From now, to the end of the year and some more next year, I plan to read more. Admittedly, I haven’t done much of that this year, and as a fan of fiction, reading is my escape as well as a tool to reorganize my thoughts. And speaking of organization, I’m literally decluttering and reorganizing my work space. (We’ll chat more on that).

  3. Daily Affirmations

Lately, I’ve been waking up and getting straight to it. Making bottles and clocking in. I eat breakfast if there’s time in between and I thank God if I remember to. In addition to having several seats, daily affirmations is on my list for good practice. I admired my sister’s mirror affirmations. On that big dresser mirror, there’s just enough space to get a good look at yourself surrounded by handwritten notes of positivity and reminders that she’s blessed up, bossed up and on her way. I’m with it!

  4. Mirror Talk

Speaking of mirrors, you know what else I neglect to do? Be there for me. Talk to me, Hug me and love me enough that I don’t looking elsewhere to fill an empty cup.. I remember in the sixth grade when I wrote a letter to myself and a classmate found it. He thought it was the dumbest thing ever to talk to yourself. Me too. Because no one had told me otherwise. That that was ok and a form of self care. Welp, here I am in my 30s, talking to myself again. Looking at me straight in the eyes and knowing that I’m alright, going to be alright and 2020 will be the best year yet.

    Happy New Year.

Q and A With Author B. Love

One city. One Weekend!

Author B. Love and an entire girl gang of phenomenal writers will be joining forces in Memphis Tennessee, November 2nd-3rd.

The mastermind behind this anticipated event? The prolific pen pusher herself!!!

and if you’re not sure who that is, well…

1. For those who may not know you, who are you? What do you do and what are you known for?

“My name is B. Love, but I also write under the pen name Shenaé Hailey. I am a full-time author and publisher, best known for creating rough romance with holy hoodlums and warrior womEn.“

2. How long have you been writing?

“I have been writing professionally for close to four years, unprofessionally since the age of twelve.”

3. You’ve penned a lot of books! Which book would you recommend to a first time reader? And why?

“I would recommend Coffee with a Side of You or In Due Time because those are the books my readers rave about, lol.

4. You’re always engaged with your readers, whether that’s answering questions, proposing new questions/ideas, or just simply engaging with reader feedback and book discussions. Why do you think it’s important to build a relationship with your readers?

“I believe it’s important to make a personal relationship with readers because they are the reason I’m able to live my dream. It’s my way of giving back to them outside of my books. I also believe readers support those that they believe are genuine.”

5. Do your books to stand on its own, or do you typically try to build a body of work with connections between each book?

“I used to always find ways to connect my characters and books, now I prefer standalones.”

6. What are your thoughts on delivering what readers want versus what you want to write?

“I think it’s important to give them what they want from YOU not other authors. It’s more important, though, to make sure you are writing what you want, otherwise you will lose your passion.”

7. B. Love’s Winter Wonderland. The promo is out and tickets are now on sale. What can readers and other authors expect from this event?

“Fun, fun, fun! I don’t want this to be the typical event. I want everyone in attendance to leave with smiles on their faces excitedly anticipating the next event!”

8. What inspired or motivated you to create such an event?

“It is one of the things on my goal list. I want to have a hand in so many things books and entertainment. There aren’t many events for lovers of AA urban and contemporary romance in my city, so I want to change that.”

9. The roster has a great mix of new authors and notable ones. Do you see yourself as the funnel for new authors to bridge the gap between “I want it” and “I’m here now?”

“I didn’t think about it that way, but now that you’ve mentioned it, I will gladly take that role.”

10. You’re known for self-love teaching. What resources do you offer?

“Several classes, books, journals, and a podcast on Spreaker. Just search for B. Love. My self-love resources are available on www.theloveteacher.net”

12. What has influenced you the most as a writer?

“My own personal life. It’s where I draw most of my inspiration. Most of my female characters have pieces of me and the male characters have pieces of the men in my life.”

13.  What does literary success look like to you

“Reaching the goals YOU set for yourself, being pleased with the lane YOU’VE created for yourself.”

14. What new releases and/or projects can we look forward to?

“I am currently working on the second installment of my Memphis Hoodlums Series. The first standalone novel, Straddling  His Soul, is available now on Amazon.”

If you’re not already, follow B.Love and her crew on Instagram and Facebook @authoblove and @blovepublications.

And if you haven’t already, tickets are on sale for B. Love Winter Wonderland Meet and Greet. Purchase Here.

I’ll be there. 😉

Oh, Hey Staceeeeeee!

“No.Not You.

…the bow-legged one.”

-Pepa

There’s a new drama fiction in the works! 😄 I’ve been working working. Fresh new characters and an original storyline, y’all! I’m just geeked about it all.

You meet them here first! And if you ever wondered what kind of brother Pepa was talking to in the intro of “Shoop,” well it’s probably this fella here…

Name: Stacee Reynolds

Age: 30

Birthday: January 22nd

Zodiac: Aquarius

An independent social being who means well most times, but his impulsive decisions land him in compromising and sometimes life altering situations.

Physical features:

Black and bow-legged like Pepa said. 😄

Ok, foreal. Stacee’s a sepia reddish brown brother standing at  6’4 created in mind as edgy rough with best guy friend potential. (That’s probably a run on sentence). 😄 But what I’m trying to say is at first glance he’s that dude. Perhaps intimidating at first due to his tall stature, but nonetheless with his cool on, and his “I’m here for you” demeanor, it’s hard NOT to love Stacee.

…even with his cheating ass, lying ass ways!

🙄

We’re still rooting for him though. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I originally started writing Stacee with rapper The Game in mind. Over time he has morphed into his own look, but I still use Game as a reference.

Here’s an unedited excerpt of what my other protagonist, Shaunie Hudson, thinks during their first meeting:

“He was fine fine. And not a Renni kind of fine, but a let’s smoke and fuck if that’s cool kind of fine. He was big. Like tall and broad chested with long legs. His skin was like my caramel macchiato after added creamer. Smooth with no blemishes, but I just knew there had to be some tats under that work shirt.

…There was no way Renni would go for this shit.”

I’ve changed his complexion since…and who’s Renni and what shit won’t he go for? 🤔

Gotta read to know. 😄

Writing Resources

I put everything into my first book. It was my absolute best. Everything I had in me as a writer was left within the pages, hoping to be picked up by its reader and loved just as much its writer.

It has been a little over a year since “Twenty One Weaks” released, and best was then, but better is now. I’ve learned SO much since then, and I continue to grow and evolve as a writer, an author, and a creative being.

In preparation for my second novel I pulled out the pen and pad and really went to work on studying my craft, and shaping book two into what I know will be my next best.

I personally like K.M. Weiland’s writer resources. From creating character ARCS to structuring my novel.

“Outlining Your Novel”

thumbnail.jpg

I’m using the same outlining format as I did for “Twenty Weaks.” Each chapter has its own page, and then I list key points for the chapter. However, the resource “Outlining Your Novel” discusses different types of outlining including Mind Map, and a Pictorial Outline. I incorporated the pictorial outline and made character profiles folders. I also found pictures of locations to help with the visuals.

“Creating Character ARCS”

thumbnail4.jpg

This resource has been the most useful. I’m actually still working through the book. I literally started from the first page and incorporated everything from my book to the notes provided. For example, the first chapter discusses the lie your character believes. It dives deeper into helping the writer (me) discover what is the lie, symptoms of the lie, and what the character believes. These were components I hadn’t thought about in my first book. Sure, I knew plot, setting, theme…you know…the basics, but actually taking the time to building my character and plot around important details makes for a stronger story.

“Structuring Your Novel”

thumbnail6.jpg

Story structure is important. I tend to get long winded and including a lot of details that the reader could do without. Chapter four discusses discovering your characters, which characters should be introduced, and helping readers keep your characters straight. I keep this resource handy as I’m working through my first draft.

If you’re looking for writing resources, I hope this helps with your search. If you’ve have other resources that you use, definitely share them. I’m always interested in other writers’ writing process.

Find these resources and more of K.M. Weiland’s work HERE.

BrittShelf (2018 Starter Reads)

GOAL: Two Books A Month

LIFE: “Girl, yeah right!”

Maaaaan, between school fulltime, work fulltime, and everything that comes with being a mother, writing, AND having a little bit of a life there’s hardly time to do the thing I enjoy the most.

Gone are the days when my afternoons were free and I could curl up and get lost in a good book.

But if there’s a will there’s a way, and good time management might carve out that much needed down time with a good book.

I’m definitely a fiction girl, but non-fiction has it way of making the cut nowadays. Check out my starter reads for this year.
